WVU Names David Miller New Associate Provost
for Extension and Public Service

David E. Miller, a Preston County native with expertise in West Virginia agriculture and government relations, will become the associate provost and director of Extension and Public Service at West Virginia University effective July 1.

Miller, currently the University’s executive officer for government and community relations, has more than 30 years of experience in agriculture, education and government relations. He will continue statewide government relations work on behalf of the University in his new role.

Before joining WVU, Miller served as the deputy commissioner of agriculture between 1995 and 2000. In that position, he was responsible for day-to-day operations of the W.Va. Department of Agriculture. He was also the department’s legislative liaison and personnel director.

Miller spent his early career with the Preston County schools, including teaching high school history, social studies, government, economics and psychology; coaching basketball; serving as assistant principal and principal; and working as the system’s director of personnel.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and social studies from Fairmont State College (FSC) and a master’s degree in education administration from the University of Virginia. He is a member of the FSC Sports Hall of Fame.

Miller has served in the West Virginia Legislature as both a senator and delegate. As senator, he was vice chair of the education committee and chair of the roads and transportation committee. His other committee assignments included agriculture, natural resources, energy, judiciary and pensions. He chaired the agriculture committee when he was a delegate.

Miller is replacing Dr. Larry Cote, who is leaving the position after more than 10 years to become the founding director of WVU’s undergraduate minor in leadership studies. The minor will be offered by the Division of Public Administration in the School of Applied Social Sciences in the WVU Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.

West Virginia Workers and the Disabled Need Your Help!

Dear Union Leaders, Activists and Friends,

We are asking that you contact the Governor’s Office ASAP about the impending closure of the WV Rehabilitation Center in Institute.

Request the Governor to convene a task force or committee in order to explore options and develop a plan to make better use of the Center in order to keep it open and continue to serve the people in our state with the serious life challenges they and their families face.

The Rehab Center is one of only nine others in the country and over its 50-year history; it has provided comprehensive job training and rehabilitation so that disabled West Virginians could earn paychecks instead of welfare checks.  Over 60,000 West Virginias have been served.

Please call Governor Joe Manchin’s office at 558-2000 or Toll-Free (888) 438-2731 and ask him to support the rehab workers and find a way to keep the WV Rehabilitation Services facility in Institute, WV open to save 100 jobs and critical service to West Virginia’s disabled citizens.  You may also e-mail the Governor at Governor@WVGov.org

When contacting the Governor’s office please leave your name and if you are a union member, what union and any position you may hold.

For additional information e-mail Barbara Spradling, President of AFSCME Local 3248

Reminder!

West Virginia AFL-CIO / WVU Institute for Labor Studies
2007 Summer School / Safety and Health Summer School
June 18 – 22, 2007 ~ Lakeview Resort in Morgantown
Lakeview Resort room reservation cut off date is May 11, 2007

Both of these Summer School programs are offered in the belief that the training of union officers and members is essential to the development of a strong and forward looking labor movement.  Having these two programs run concurrently allows union members most interested in safety and health issues to benefit from some of the traditional offerings of the AFL-CIO Summer School (such as assemblies, picnic, banquet), while concentrating on workplace safety and health.  Scheduling for both programs during the same week also permits local unions to conserve resources by allowing members of the same local to travel or room together.

The West Virginia AFL-CIO Summer School is a certificate program designed with the expectation that each participant will attend the program for four years.  Through completion of the entire program, participants acquire integrated skills and insight that are relevant to them both as union members and as members of society.  Although participants are encouraged to attend for four years, each year’s program is self-contained and offers valuable exposure to those who may be unable to attend the full program.

The participants who enroll in the Safety and Health Summer School will spend each day in classes related to preventing, avoiding or addressing workplace hazards.  The classes will be taught by experienced safety and health trainers who have been recognized as Certified Safety Professionals or as experts in some other aspect of safety and health training.  You will have the opportunity to have hands on experience with technology and equipment.

Contact this office ASAP for additional details!
