Tell Congress: No More Toxic Trade
Toxic toys, red-leaded steel, counterfeit circuit breakers, poisoned pet food, contaminated human food. The list of dangerous imports endangering our families goes on and on. Meanwhile, our jobs
are being exported to countries without strong labor, environmental, health, or consumer safety protections.
Take Action!
Help protect our families, homes, workplaces, and communities from toxic imports.
Join the United Steelworkers’ national day of action on January 16 as we visit the district offices of over 100 members of Congress to tell them that cheap goods have a high price.
On this day, we will demand that they take action. We will put them on notice that our trade laws must champion safety and environmental standards as well as workers’ rights.

BEYOND JUSTICE: Bush Administration's Labor Department Abuses Labor Union Regulatory Authorities
By Scott Lilly
Read the full report:
http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2007/12/beyond_justice.html
A new report, Beyond Justice: Bush Administration's Labor Department Abuses Labor Union Regulatory Authorities, reveals a campaign to undermine the reputation of the labor union movement through a classic political misinformation campaign, all under the supervision of a lifelong partisan political operative whose career has been dedicated to the destruction of his political opponents.
The equal application of the law is a fundamental principle of democratic society in the United States. How closely the Bush administration actually adheres to this principle, however, has been increasingly drawn into question, particularly over the past year.
Multiple investigations continue into allegations that the Bush administration pressured U.S. attorneys to selectively enforce the law to influence local campaigns and serve political purposes. Meanwhile, a wide range of regulatory agencies have failed to enforce federal laws, benefiting some segments of society at the expense of others.
But when it comes to the U.S. Department of Labor, the administration has chosen to selectively over-enforce the Landrum-Griffin Act, a law aimed at improving the governance of the nation's organized labor organizations.

GOVERNOR ENCOURAGES MOUNTAINEER FANS TO ATTEND FIESTA BOWL ON JAN. 2
Contact: Lara Ramsburg, 304-558-2000
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – With many good seats still available as part of WVU’s official allotment for the Fiesta Bowl, Gov. Joe Manchin is encouraging every West Virginian who is able to buy a ticket and attend the game in support of the Mountaineer team to please do so.
“These student-athletes have given so much to our state, and we need to join together and encourage and support them in every way possible,” Manchin said. “They are competing in one of the most elite and well-respected bowls in the country in front of a national television audience, and I believe that selling every ticket allotted to WVU and being there in person to cheer them on is one very special way that we can say thank you to them for all of the excitement and prestige that they have brought to West Virginia this football season.
“So, let’s join together and show these fine young men our true Mountaineer spirit by selling out the game and filling the stadium with blue and gold.”
Tickets may be purchased by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office at 1-800-WVU-GAME or online at www.WVUGame.com.

CHRISTMAS FOR NURSES
Dear Brothers and Sisters:
I am writing on behalf of the West Virginia Nurses Associations Locals 201 & 205 who have endured over 90 days of a work stoppage due to their belief in their profession and the adequate staffing that is required to assist their patients.
As members of the West Virginia AFL-CIO, the WVNA Locals 201 & 205 are requesting assistance from members of both local and international unions to donate some “change for Christmas” so that the children of our brothers and sisters who continue their fight for the working men and women of the nursing profession are able to provide gifts for their children.
We are asking to donate whatever amount you are able to do, from One Dollar to One Hundred Dollars, any amount is greatly appreciated and will be a great assistance to our union family.
Again, on behalf of the West Virginia Nurses Association, I thank you for your time and your assistance. All donations should be mailed to:

The Worker Freedom Act
The Worker Freedom Act protects workers !!
Increasing numbers of employers are using the workplace as a forum to promote their religious and political views, as well as views about joining a union. Employees should not be forced to attend meetings or participate in communications on issues unrelated to their job performance. They should not have to fear retaliation from an employer — such as being disciplined or discharged — for choosing not to attend such meetings. Under current law an employer can order their employees into an office or meeting room and force them to listen to almost anything, as long as the meeting occurs on work time. Employees have no protection for refusing to participate in workplace discussions that promote views or issues unrelated to the performance of their jobs.
Some employers use the workplace as a forum for partisan politics, especially during major elections, calling mandatory meetings to enlist employees to support or oppose certain issues or promote certain candidates. Some employees are pressured to share in the employer’s religious affiliation, to join in morning prayers or attend prayer breakfasts and to receive unsolicited religious education. When workers try to form unions, 92 percent of employers force them to sit through mandatory meetings to hear one-sided, anti-union presentations.
For all these reasons, employees in West Virginia need the protection offered by the Worker Freedom Act, which will eliminate forced captive-audience meetings.
Intimidation and coercion at the workplace is un-American!
