CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia AFL-CIO has endorsed Isaac Sponaugle to be selected in the May Primary Election to serve as West Virginia Attorney General.

“Isaac Sponaugle has a proven track record of vigorously fighting to protect and support working families,” West Virginia AFL-CIO President Josh Sword said. “In the eight years he’s served in the House of Delegates, Isaac has never waivered in his dedication to ensuring West Virginians are provided a safe work place, fair wages and affordable health care – in fact he has a perfect voting record in the eyes of the West Virginia AFL-CIO.

“I am confident he will bring those values to the Attorney General’s Office.”

The West Virginia AFL-CIO represents more than 600 affiliated unions, 70,000 working families, and 70,000 retirees in the Mountain State. To garner an endorsement by the West Virginia AFL-CIO, a candidate must receive a 2/3 majority of votes cast by the 76 members of its Committee On Political Education (COPE). Sponaugle was chosen overwhelmingly.

“I have fought for working families throughout my legislative career in West Virginia.  I’m honored to receive the endorsement from the West Virginia AFL-CIO.  It represents the best part of our state, which are our working families,” Sponaugle said. “They believe a change must occur in the West Virginia Attorney General’s Office.  They further believe that I’m the person who can deliver on that change.  As Attorney General, I will continue to fight on behalf of working families.  I will protect their health care, not play political games with it.  I will hold Big Pharma responsible for the opioid crisis within our state, not profit off it.  I will continue to deliver on my promise to fight for our working families at all times.”

Sword noted that in addition to his statehouse duties, Sponaugle has been working for months to lay the groundwork for an effective and well-funded campaign to defeat current Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.

“In gathering support for his campaign, Isaac has very effectively pointed out the many missteps of the current Attorney General, including his efforts at the national level to undermine West Virginians’ current health care coverage,” Sword said. “With all the other challenges West Virginia faces, its residents cannot afford an attorney general that is working against their best interests, especially when it comes to healthcare and prescription drug costs. In contrast, Isaac Sponaugle will be vocal advocate for protecting such critical rights.”

"When working men and women stand united across our valleys and hollows, there is no legislative hurdle we cannot overcome and no picket line we cannot hold."
